Pension Credit claims, scams to watch out for and Counter Terrorism updates from NKDC

Pension Credit - one of the most under-claimed benefits in Lincolnshire

Pension Credit is one of the most under-claimed benefits in Lincolnshire – but once someone successfully claims it a whole range of other benefits can be unlocked too.

If a person is eligible for Pension Credit, they could also receive the Winter Fuel Payment, housing benefit, cost of living payments, support for mortgage interest, Council Tax discount, a free TV licence (for those aged 75 plus), help with NHS discounts and more.

There’s also a helpline for anyone to call if they’re struggling to claim, on 0800 99 1234.

It’s been announced that eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment will change to include those who are on Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits only, so it’s well-worth anyone checking now if they think they could be eligible for Pension Credit. It only takes a few moments and could make all the difference.

Scams currently circulating

A text message scam about parking fines is still doing the rounds.

Some customers have reported to NKDC that they've received a text that starts with words like ‘Parking Penalty Charge Notice’ and claims that an outstanding parking ticket is due. The text is fake and is being sent by scammers.

Customers will never be contacted by text message about a PCN. They should always use the details on the back of the actual ticket itself if they receive one.

Did you know that we can all help stop the scammers by reporting these scam texts? Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows you to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding to 7726.

Another scam to be aware of is bogus text message saying you have three days to claim your 'annual living allowance'.

This scam text refers to an ‘annual allowance’ - however this is fake as it's not an official government scheme.

The link in the message takes you to a copycat government website using a convincing gov.uk logo, font and branding, and also includes genuine links to the official gov.uk website. It instructs you to register to receive a ‘£900 Cost of Living payment’ by entering your name, number, email address and home address. It also requests your financial information. Ignore this text if you receive it. You can also report it to your phone provider on 7726.

Counter Terrorism Policing’s Winter Campaign - Protect UK

With the winter season quickly approaching it is important to note that public areas will become busy with various activities, such as Christmas shopping, festive markets, pantomimes and concerts. We all have a role to play in maintaining our own safety and that of the people around us.

Protect UK’s extensive research shows that some people are reluctant to report because they worry they will get it wrong or waste police time. Counter Terrorism Policing wants to reassure them that they won’t be wasting the force's time, and it is important to trust their instincts if they feel that something isn’t right.

The Counter Terrorism Policing’s Winter Campaign encourages people to stay alert and offers advice on how to keep each other safe.
