It has come to our notice that 999 Call Handlers are asking callers to fetch the Defib without giving out the access code you'd need to release the Defib from its cabinet. They should give the number.
By the very nature of making a 999 call, it is bound to be an anxious time for all involved. If you make a 999 call and are told to fetch the Defib, please could you be aware that they need to give you the access code before you set off to fetch it. They will give you the code if the triage says the defib is needed for the emergency.
Unfortunately we're unable to publish the access code, because of the risk of vandalism and mis-use. Hopefully the 999 protocols will be updated asap to make it clear to call handlers that they need to advise the caller of the access code - the number is on their system so there shouldn't be any problem with them finding it.
